Apple iPhone - Install Device Software Updates

Here's how to check for and install your iPhone's software updates.

iOS update via the Cellular Network or Wi-Fi

  1. Press the
    Power button
     if the device does not power on automatically.
  2. If prompted, slide the
    Unlock switch
     right, to unlock the device.
  3. From a Home screen, navigate:
    Settings Settings Icon
    General
    Software Update
    .
  4. Tap
    Download and Install
    .
    If prompted, enter your passcode.
  5. Review the Terms and Conditions then tap
    Agree
    .
  6. Once the software update is complete, slide the unlock switch to the right to unlock the device.

Automatically update iOS

Software updates are completed overnight while the device is connected to Wi-Fi and charging.
  1. From a Home screen, navigate:
    Settings Settings Icon
    General
    .
  2. Tap
    Customize Automatic Updates
    .
  3. Tap the
    Download iOS Updates switch
     on to enable .
    Some updates might need to be installed manually.
  4. Once enabled, tap the
    Install iOS Updates switch
     to turn on or off.
    If enabled, iOS updates are automatically installed overnight after downloading.

iOS update using Mac or PC

  1. From the computer, close any open app(s).
  2. Press the
    Power button
     to power the iPhone on.
  3. Do one of the following:

    • If using a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15, open
      Finder

    • If using a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier or a PC, open
      iTunes
      .
  4. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable supplied then locate the device.

  5. Click 'General' or 'Settings' then click
    Check for Update
    .
  6. Click
    Download and Update
    .
  7. If prompted, enter your passcode.
