Determining Message Type - Apple iOS

Here's how to determine the message type on Apple iOS devices.
  • Apple® uses different colored message bubbles to indicate whether a message is sent via iMessage® (blue) or standard SMS/MMS (green).
  • iMessage is an Apple service that allows unlimited messaging to other iOS 5 and higher devices. For more info, refer to the Apple iMessage web page.
  1. From the Messaging app, tap a message.
  2. Verify the color of the message bubble.
    • Blue bubble is for iMessage.
      The text entry field displays iMessage and requires a valid Apple ID.
    • Green bubble is for SMS/MMS.
      Text entry field displays Text Message and requires a messaging plan.
