Here's how to add / remove Home screen items (widgets, apps or folders) and set the wallpaper on your Pixel 4 / 4 XL.
To customize the Home screen on your device, do any of the following:

Add Apps

A shortcut to an individual contact or bookmark can only be added to a Home screen via a widget.
  1. From a Home screen, swipe up from the middle to display all apps.
  2. Touch and hold an app.
  3. Drag and drop the shortcut to the preferred Home screen (where there is empty space).
    For the app to be successfully added, there must be sufficient space on the screen. If needed, additional Home screen panels may be added.

Add Widgets

Widgets are mini-apps (e.g., weather, clock, calendar, etc.) that can be added to a Home screen. They aren't the same as shortcuts as they generally display info and take up more space than a single icon.
  1. From a Home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
  2. Tap
    Widgets
    .
  3. Select a category then touch and hold a widget
  4. Drag the widget to the preferred Home screen then release.
    For the widget to be successfully added, there must be sufficient space on the screen. If needed, additional Home screen panels may be added.
  5. If applicable, tap additional options to activate widget.
    Options vary depending upon the type of widget.

Add / Remove Folders

  1. From a Home screen, tap and hold a shortcut (e.g., Cloud, Contacts, etc.).
  2. Drag the shortcut onto another shortcut (e.g., Gmail, Calendar, etc.) then release.
    A folder containing the shortcuts is created. To rename the folder:
    1. Tap the folder.
    2. Tap the
      Title bar
       (bottom of the open folder).
    3. Enter a name then tap the
      Done icon
       Done icon.
    To remove a folder, drag the app(s) out of an existing folder until the folder disappears.

Remove App / Widget

  1. From a Home screen, touch and hold the item (e.g., widget, shortcut, etc.).
  2. Drag the item to Remove (at the top) then release.

Set Wallpaper

  1. From a Home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
  2. Tap
    Wallpaper & style
    .
  3. Tap
    Change wallpaper
    , then select the desired wallpaper category from the available folders (e.g., My photos, Landscapes, etc.).
  4. Select an image, then choose an option to preview:
    • Home screen
    • Lock screen.
  5. Tap the
    Done icon
    , then choose an option to 'Set wallpaper on':
    • Lock screen.
    • Home screen and lock screen
