Gmail for Android - View Messages

Here's how to view a Gmail message on your Android smartphone / tablet.
Ensure your Google apps are up to date as the following steps apply to the most recent version of the Gmail™ app on your Android™ device.
  1. From a Home screen, navigate:
    Apps icon
    (Google)
    Gmail Gmail icon
    .
    If unavailable, swipe up from the center of the display then tap
    Gmail
     .
  2. Ensure the appropriate email address is selected:
    1. Tap the
      Switch account icon
       Switch account icon (upper-right).
    2. Tap the appropriate email address.
  3. From the Inbox, tap a message.
  4. View the email message.
    If an email attachment is present, tap the attachment to view.
    If an app is required to download an attachment:
    1. From a Home screen, navigate:
      Apps icon
      Play Store
      .
    2. Download and install the appropriate app from the Google Play Store.
